Buying motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers from a seller you cannot visit

This one leans on a sympathetic story rather than a dealership. The seller is a widow settling an estate, a service member on deployment, a couple whose health ended the travelling. The unit is priced low because it has to go, and the seller cannot show it in person, which is exactly why they insist on a third party: a shipping and escrow company that will hold your funds, deliver the RV, and give you five or seven days to inspect it before the money is released. That company does not exist. Its website was registered days earlier, its logo borrowed, its phone answered by the same person selling the unit. Sometimes the buyer is told the transaction runs through a marketplace's vehicle purchase protection programme, complete with an invoice carrying that marketplace's logo, and is asked to buy gift cards or wire funds to fund the escrow. The protection programme being described does not exist either.

Four checks that end it

  1. 01No legitimate escrow or transport company is introduced to you by the seller. If they chose it, it is theirs.
  2. 02No marketplace runs a vehicle purchase programme funded by gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.
  3. 03Insist on seeing the unit, or send a local RV inspector of your own choosing to the address where it sits.
  4. 04Match the name on the title to the name on the bank account you are being asked to pay. A mismatch ends it.
